I want to thank Mitch, Clay, & guides for a Whitetail hunt, I will never forget. In my home state of Illinois it is illegal to hunt deer with a high power rifle, due to the flat terrain. I decided to book a hunt with Mo-Whitetail in order to hunt with my new savage 30-06. One the second day of hunting there had already been several nice bucks killed on the farm. I was setup in a tower blind in a pasture overlooking an alfalfa field.
After sunrise, I watched a buck about a half mile away running back and forth in a meadow showing off for some does and yearlings. Then out of the corner of my eye, I caught movement. A large buck was coming across the alfalfa field; boy did he stand out in all that bright green. I knew he was going to be a shooter by the size of his rack. He was moving at a fast walk with his tongue hanging out from running does all night. I was trying to stay calm but my heart was pounding. As I moved my gun from the left side of the window to the right where the shot was going to be I hit the metal support beam making a loud Clang... This caused the buck to stop moving and look in my direction. There was maybe a three-second window for me to calm my nerves and take the broad side shot at about 200 yards.
When I shot, I knew it was a good hit and he ran 10 yards straight into the ground. I can't help bu wonder if I would have pulled it off if it weren't for the lucky clang at the right time. I don't think a whistle or grunt would have stopped him at the at distance for that long or may have sent him into a full run.
I look forward to my next trip to Mo-Whitetail, a true top-notch operation.
